Radiation Oncology
"Simulation" Information
Please read before your "Simulation" appointment!!
-
WHAT IS "SIMULATION?" - Simulation is the process used to plan your radiation therapy treatments.
-
THE DAY OF SIMULATION - The Radiation Oncologist (Doctor) and the Radiation Therapists will "map-out" your treatment area using a special x-ray machine called a "simulator." This will be done under the supervision and direction of your Radiation Oncologist. When needed, a special immobilization device may be constructed to ensure that you will not move during your treatment. The entire procedure should take from one to two hours. Unless previously arranged, you will not be receiving a radiation treatment the day of simulation.
-
THE PROCEDURE - Important information critical to your treatment is gathered during your simulation appointment. At times during your simulation you may hear voices or see staff that you were not originally introduced to. We have many specialists who are part of your treatment team. If they appear to be talking "about you" rather than "to you," do not be bothered.
The Radiation Therapists will be taking x-ray films and marking your skin with a non-permanent ink for reference points. In some cases contrast material such as barium used in x-ray procedures may be used to outline critical organs.
-
THE TREATMENT PLAN - The "treatment plan" includes using a computer to find out the best way the radiation can be delivered in an effort to reduce the side effects. Special shields, called blocks, that are custom-cut to your particular treatment area must be designed and constructed. Your treatment will begin approximately three working days after your simulation or CT scan, unless a "Simulation Plan" is needed.
-
YOUR DAILY TREATMENT APPOINTMENTS - Once your simulation is completed, the team will work on the treatment plan. This normally takes two to three working days after all the needed information is gathered. Once the plan is complete, you will be notified by telephone as to when you will start your daily radiation treatments. Please be certain we have a correct daytime phone number for you so that you can be easily reached. If you have not been contacted within 48 hours after completion of your simulation or simulation plan, please call us at 205-592-1258.
