NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON AND SPORTS MEDICINE SPECIALIST LAWRENCE LEMAK, M.D. JOINS TRINITY MEDICAL CENTER

Lemak Sports Medicine and Orthopedics Will Move to Trinity’s Campus

BIRMINGHAM, AL (November 2, 2009) – Trinity Medical Center announced today that nationally recognized sports medicine and orthopedic surgeon Lawrence Lemak, M.D. will relocate his practice to Trinity Medical Center and become an integral part of the hospital’s efforts to create a comprehensive orthopedic center of excellence.

Lemak’s associates, Drs. David Lemak and Robert Agee, will also join Trinity, along with their fellows and clinic employees. The Lemak Sports Medicine and Orthopedics practice located on Brookwood Blvd. will move to a professional office building on the Trinity Medical Center campus in mid-January. Dr. Michael Patterson will continue to be based at a second practice location in Shelby County, which will remain open.

“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Lemak and his outstanding team to Trinity Medical Center,” said Keith Granger, interim chief executive officer of Trinity Medical Center. “Dr. Lemak is an innovative surgeon whose pioneering work in the field of orthopedic medicine and outstanding record of clinical excellence will compliment the wellestablished, excellent orthopedic specialists already a part of Trinity’s medical staff. We look forward to the expertise and contributions that Dr. Lemak and his partners will bring to our orthopedic program and to the community.”

Lemak is highly regarded for his work in the area of sports safety and injury prevention. He serves as team physician for 18 high schools, as well as Miles College, Alabama State University and the University of Montevallo. Lemak is medical director of the new United Football League and Major League Soccer, as well as several other professional teams.

Lemak is a founder of the American Sports Medicine Institute, which developed an internationally recognized fellowship program. More than 100 physicians and surgeons have studied under the leadership of Lemak and the other physicians in his practice. Currently, he is training three fellows. Lemak is a graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical School and completed his orthopedic residency at University of Pittsburgh.

The Trinity team has a clear vision for creating the region’s premier sports medicine and orthopedic center where we can provide exceptional care for the area’s athletes and orthopedic patients, and I welcome the opportunity to be a part of this exciting effort,” said Lemak. “Our shared and unwavering commitment to deliver high-quality care creates the foundation for a strong and mutually beneficial partnership.”

Trinity remains focused on developing a reputation for excellence for key health services. In addition to its focus on orthopedics, last month, Trinity was named the number one hospital for overall cardiac care in the state of Alabama by HealthGrades, an independent healthcare ratings company. Trinity is currently seeking regulatory approval to complete construction and move to the former digital hospital project on Hwy 280. Upon Trinity winning regulatory approval, Lemak also looks forward to one day practicing in a new, state-of-the-art hospital environment. Lemak was instrumental in developing the original architectural plans for that facility and provided his expertise and input for the design of the surgical services department and operating suites.

“The operating rooms are built to accommodate the most advanced surgical technology and a wide range of orthopedic procedures, including the most complex cases,” said Lemak. “If we can put these operating rooms into service, they will become the premier operating environment in our region. Additionally, a viewing theater attached to the operating rooms would enhance our ability to train the next generation of orthopedic surgeons.”

Lemak and his partners will join Trinity Medical Center on December 1, 2009.
