Residency Programs

The Trinity campus, located southeast of downtown Birmingham on the south slope of Red Mountain, is a 496-bed hospital in a health care complex that includes three professional office buildings, a free-standing Outpatient Rehabilitation and Physician Complex including a fitness center and indoor swimming pool, a freestanding neuroscience center, a comprehensive mitral valve prolapse center, a 26-bed Transitional Care Unit (skilled nursing facility), a 27-bed rehabilitation unit, and a 40-bed psychiatric unit.

Significant achievements include:

  • The Trinity Mitral Valve Prolapse Center was the first comprehensive center for the diagnosis and treatment of mitral valve prolapse in the United States.
  • Trinity was the first community hospital in Alabama to perform open heart surgery.
  • The Alabama Heart Institute at Trinity performed the first “Kelvin 500 Sensor” pacemaker implant in Alabama.
  • Trinity’s Sleep Disorders Center was the first to effectively use the continuous positive airway pressure device to alleviate sleep apnea, and was the first in the state to devise an effective computerized sleep analysis program which is now used nationally.
  • Trinity’s cardiovascular lab was the first in the state to do transluminal coronary angioplasty.
  • Trinity was the first community hospital in Alabama to install a cobalt unit.
